Immunological Aspects of Transfusion

Abstract
Even in a well established blood bank have occurred unexplained hemolytic transfusion reactions, one or two cases a year. It is suspected that it develops from the immunologically incompatible blood transfusion which can not be easily detected by usual cross matching or blood typing technique. It requires a thorough immunological knowledge and proper technique of cross matching and blood typing to prevent from this transfusion reaction. In near future the tissue typing for leukocyte and platelet transfusion should be performed. The authors describe the blood cell antigens and their corresponding antibodies which are able to cause a mismatching transfusion reaction and some other immunological problems in blood transfusion.
